VOCAL TEACHER

Anjanette Mickelsen is a world-class vocal coach who helps people learn to use their voices better. Before a big speaking tour, I was advised to book a session with her so she could help me use my voice the right way. I squeezed fourteen scheduled speaking engagements into a four-day trip. I had no idea how that much speaking would exhaust and stress my vocal chords. I regret not booking a session with her before I left.

Anjanette got her start when she was in high school taking voice lessons from a vocal coach. From the first session, she saw immediate results. She knew she wanted to teach voice lessons for a living. Now, Anjanette is recognized as a leading voice coach with the highest designation in the technique she teaches, which is Speech Level Singing.

Anjanette charges $150 per hour. If she bills two hours a day, she makes a nice income. As her reputation has grown, so has her client list, and she easily books more than two billable hours each day. Some days are packed full while other days are “rest days.” She has control over her schedule which allows her to take personal time for herself, recharge, or work on other projects. Her clients are from all over the world, and include professional singers as well as amateurs. Teaching at international singing programs during the summer increases Anjanette’s revenue and her brand awareness. She also networks at a lot of music events, and supports her clients by attending their performances.

Anjanette explains, “A common misconception is that anybody who sings well can be a singing teacher. A successful vocal coach requires multiple skill sets. Get the proper training in vocal and teaching methods. I highly recommend the Speech Level Singing Teacher Certification program where you can train in both vocal and teaching techniques.”

She continues, “Focus on building a clientele, especially as you start your business. Building a great clientele takes time and patience. It is a lot like planting seeds in a garden. You may not get immediate results but, once the plants start growing, it is well worth the effort and very rewarding.”

Anjanette talks about developing relationships, “The music business is one of relationships. Be a likeable, personable, caring person. For most people, singing is a very personal and emotional experience because your voice is a part of who you are and how you express yourself to the world. People generally don't get hurt or offended if they hear they have a crappy guitar, but it can be a very hurtful experience if they hear they have a crappy voice. One of the reasons for my success as a vocal coach is that I can genuinely help people improve even if they think they are a hopeless case. I try to be patient with every student regardless of their natural ability, or where they are in their progression. I truly believe in my students and because of the technique I teach, I KNOW I can help each one, if they are willing to do the work.
